about

Many bands on the Not Lame site will have The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson cited as being big influences - so much so that many folks are immune to giving much credence to the fact that a band may truly be not only influenced by Wilson`s artistry but are worthy of our attention.

I give to you Creaky Boards who ARE very much influenced by said band and lead songwriter but who bring a new vibrancy to the discussion of influences including a Phil Spector-ish display of production grandiosity.

Give a listen below - but know that it only gives you a hint of what is going on here on "Brooklyn Is Love". "8 out of 10. the album is a neo Beach Boys revival - "Now I`m in The City" shines with full Spectorian Wall of Sound production circa 1964, but it has the lyrical confessions of modern groups like The Shins or Belle & Sebastian.

The follow up "Brooklyn" has a vague Eastern European sound, like a Mary Hopkin tune played by Kasenetz-Katz. This track is unique, as most of the album follows a melodic "Pet Sounds" template. The harmonies are lush and complex arrangements are full on "Oh Just Be Silent" although the lyrics are paranoid ramblings ("Don`t tell your mother, don`t tell your lover..."). What makes this better than your average Brian Wilson clone, is that Hoepfner includes other dynamic elements, much like Zumpano or Olivia Tremor Control. And the songs are all original, and catchy as hell. "Lie To Me" has a Shangri La`s type vocal break in mid song, and "I`m So Serious" has 50`s styled do-wop backing vocals to support the great melodies. The autobiographical piano ballad "I`m Touching The Electric Fence" and mid-tempo "SOS" are a departure from the rest of the album, but are good songs. This album is never boring or feels derivative and is worth many repeat listens. Enjoy it." Power Pop A Holic.

"A peppy mix of `60s harmonies and hip shaking pop-indie sound, the Creaky Boards are a band that delivers from track one. Based out of Brooklyn, the band`s sophomore LP, "Brooklyn is Love," has an ambient, almost folk sound reminiscent of The Beach Boys and Saturday Looks Good to Me. While each song on the album is exceptionally different from the rest, many tracks such as "Now I`m in the City" and "Oh, Just Be Silent" have a happy-go-lucky vintage sound that bring to mind poodle-skirts, milkshakes and varsity jackets, while retaining a certain modern indie edge. The band makes use of diverse instruments throughout the album, incorporating bells, trumpets, trombones and more into songs such as "Brooklyn" . Daily Campus.
